Objectified Responce

Objectified shows you that design is pretty much a way of life. In the video they use a lot of Rams' principals to describe Apple Products. They also use Apple as an example of exceptional design. A man in the video also makes a good point when he says, "What makes a good design in the way you see the world." By saying this he is stating that to be a great design artist and to create things and images that people will want to use you must see the world like you are creating for it as a person. I believe that this video was very informative and useful to my graphics design major. It was useful to me because it gave me a perfect example of that good design actually is.

Interviews

I interviewed three people. A 72 year old man, a 24 year old woman, and a 22 year old man. They all said that the color was soothing and that having both the brush and the peeler was convenient. They didn't like where the peeler was placed. They said it was dangerous and inconvenient. The 72 year old said that with his arthritis he could not hold the peeler well and that would lead to him hurting his hand on the sharp edge. Our group took all of this into consideration and perfected the potato peeler.

IDEO Video

I enjoyed watching this video. I liked how the large groups split up into smaller ones to solve the same problem and then came together in the end to create a final product. I also liked the environment that IDEO created (or rather the employees created for themselves) for there employees to work. It was a creative environment that can spark creative ideas that could lead to something great. I also enjoyed how they didn't discourage unfathomable ideas, but built on them to make them possible. Overall the video inspired me to recreate this horribly designed potato peeler to the best of my ability and use my team mates to bring all of our ideas together and creat the best design possible. The video stated that the oldest person in the room is not always going to be the leader. This theory is a well received one because in most companies thats how it works. I liked how it differs in IDEO. My favorite quote form the video was "the only thing that doesn't need to be designed is nature", I like it because it is a very pure and true statement. All in all i really enjoyed the video and it inspired me to do my best.

Final Prototype

Prototypes and Original Object

These are the prototypes that we came up with. We added more of a grip, made the handle bigger, contoured the brush, and built it to where the potato peeler is inside the brush when you take off the handle.

Our group decided to redesign this potato peeler. We feel that it is unsafe and not very convenient. We also came to the conclusion that the handle was to small and the bristles would only clean one part of the potato.
